It was one of those nights for Woodbridge’s football team Thursday at Irvine Stadium.
The Warriors were dominated from the start by a talented Brea Olinda team and lost, 38-0, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Woodbridge High's Nick Greenberg (23) tries to get past Brea Olinda High School players during their game at Irvine High School on Thursday.
“Believe it or not, there were some decent things that came out of it,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. “We had a horrible week of practice and it showed. Brea Olinda is a good football team but we made them look a whole lot better.
“My hats off to their staff. They had them prepared. We gave up too many big plays tonight. I thought offensively, we had some long drives, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the end zone and that’s what you got to do.”
Woodbridge was unable to stop Brea Olinda junior Josh Vizcaya, who rushed for 203 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns. Vizcaya capped his big night with an 84-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to make it 38-0.
The remainder of the game was played with a running clock under a new CIF rule that keeps it moving when the margin is 35 points or more.
“You like to look at something positive, we’ll look at the video and see what we can do, but we’ve got to get better,” Gibson said.
Derek Calderon led Woodbridge, rushing for 72 yards on 18 carries.
Woodbridge again rotated two quarterbacks with Matt Callahan and Brendan Beresford combining for 23 yards.
It marked the second win out of the gate for Brea Olinda.
“It was wonderful, it’s a great group of kids,” said Coach Robb Perrance. I’m extremely happy for them. They’ve gone through a lot of adversity the last couple of years and they’re banding together. Every day, we’re getting stronger as a team. I’m just super proud of them. They’re working hard every day. They’re fun to coach and fun to be around.”
The Wildcats wasted little time scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Nick Ceja connected with Lorenzo Marks on a 59-yard touchdown with 5:43 left in the first quarter. Vizcaya then had touchdown runs of 3 and 2 yards and Adam Williams connected on a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the first half to make it 24-0 at halftime. Woodbridge will try to get into the win column Friday when it plays at Garden Grove against the defending CIF-SS Southern Division champions.
