After suffering a 38-0 loss to Brea Olinda in week one, Woodbridge’s football team bounced back Friday night with a 21-10 upset of Garden Grove, the defending CIF-SS Southern Division champion.
Garden Grove (1-1) was ranked No. 1 in the division last week.
“Anytime you beat the No. 1 team in the division it’s a nice win,” said Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson. “The kids had a great week of practice. I thought defensively we had a good plan and executed it well.”
The defensive standouts were Kyle Kelley, who had four sacks and caused a fumble, Phillip Hong, David McCutchan and Nick Greenberg, Gibson said.
“Our offensive line of David Patterson, Zack Rusick, Mubashir Syed, Alex Hernandez and Jae Enyart controlled the line of scrimmage,” Gibson said. “Derek Calderon ran hard and the quarterbacks managed the game well.”
Woodbridge, ranked No. 9 in this week’s Southern Division poll, is back in action Friday, hosting Segerstrom at 7 p.m. at Irvine.
The Warriors enter the game 1-2. Segerstrom (2-1) is coming off a 34-0 victory over Magnolia.
