Woodbridge High’s football team had one of the best seasons in school history last year, advancing into the second round of the CIF Southern Division playoffs.
But the Warriors, 6-5-1, a year ago, will need to replace 4,000 yards of offense.

Gibson and his staff will find out where the team stands when the Warriors open the season in zero week Friday at 7 p.m. against Aliso Niguel at Irvine Stadium.
“We’re tired of hitting ourselves, we’re ready for somebody else,” said Coach Rick Gibson.
Aliso Niguel, 4-6 a year ago, won last year’s game, also in zero week, 41-35, at Aliso Viejo.
Gibson said that senior Brendan Beresford and junior Matt Callahan will rotate at quarterback Friday night.
“We’re going to find out who is the best for the position and who has the hot hand,” Gibson said.
The two-quarterback system could last for five games or the entire season, he said.
Gibson said that senior running back Derek Calderon has been impressive and he could help fill the void left by Jalen Craver, who rushed for 1,775 yards last year.
Interesting rankings
There were mixed results for Woodbridge’s football team in the pre-season rankings. The Warriors were picked sixth in the PCL by the league coaches but No. 5 in the CIF-SS Southern Division poll.
Beckman was picked first in the league and No. 1 in the division while Northwood was second in the PCL poll and third in the Southern Division ranking.

Woodbridge needs to find a replacement at quarterback for Max Neser, who passed for 1,973 yards last year.
So Coach Rick Gibson is going to try two quarterbacks when the Warriors open the season Friday night hosting Aliso Niguel at 7 at Irvine.
Senior Brendan Beresford and junior Matt Callahan will alternate at quarterback, Gibson said.
“We’re going to find out who the best person for the position is and who has the hot hand,” Gibson said.
The two-quarterback system could last for five games or the entire season, he said.
Gibson will also be looking for a replacement for running back Jalen Craver, who rushed for 1,775 yards last year as a senior and said senior Derek Calderon could be a solid replacement.
Woodbridge is coming off a 6-5-1 season, one of the best in the school’s history.

Woodbridge defensive end Kyle Kelley (6-3, 228) has committed to Arizona, Warriors football coach Rick Gibson confirmed Wednesday.
Kelley is one of the county’s top football recruits. He landed several offers from the Pac-12 Conference, including UCLA and Washington. He also was offered by Florida.
The senior-to-be was recruited by Arizona as a defensive end/outside linebacker, Gibson said.
“He has worked very hard in the offseason,” Gibson said. “I’m excited for him.”
